Five Things is a series of talks by Australian ecology experts that offers real-world steps you can take to boost biodiversity and to make your community a haven for native plants and wildlife. In our third talk, leading native bee taxonomist, the AM's Michael Batley, will teach you five things about the gentle art of watching bees, sharing practical tips on how to identify native bees and encourage bee populations in your garden and local area.

There over 1600 named native bees in Australia, and possibly another 1000 that are yet to be discovered. They live among us, in near silence, undertaking the crucial work of pollinating wildflowers, native plants and crops. One of the greatest concerns of taxonomists like Michael Batley is that species will go extinct invisibly – that a bee will disappear before being known to science. Michael is working hard to document the bees and chart new discoveries so that we may find ways to halt their decline.

Join us as Michael sits down with native bee ecologist and science communicator Amelie Vanderstock to chat about the importance, beauty and diversity of Australia's wonderful native bees, and discover ways to bring them to your garden. Plus, enjoy a honey tasting. After the talk, Devonshire Tea will be served in Hintze Hall.

Devonshire Tea is included in the price of your ticket.

Michael Batley

Michael Batley is one of only four Australian Bee taxonomists. Described as one of the “map makers of nature”, he has named over 40 new species of Native Bee.

For the last 20 years, following retirement from Macquarie University, Michael has volunteered at the Australian Museum, assisting with the curation of the Native Bee collection.

Amelie Vanderstock

Amelie Vanderstock is a native bee ecologist, educator and musical performer. As a PhD candidate at the University of Sydney and Hokkaido University, Amelie researches the role of urban greenspaces for promoting pollinating insect biodiversity. She also researches how we can use garden-based education to grow ecological literacy amongst urban populations. Cross-pollinating music and science, Amelie creates original educational music on native bees and gardening for biodiversity as ‘Amelie Ecology’.

She has facilitated over 100 workshops and performances in Australia and Japan including with local councils, schools and festivals such as Woodford Folk Festival and National Science Week. For her creative science communications, Amelie was awarded the Ecological Society of Australia and NSW OEH award for Outstanding Outreach in 2019, and USYD Dean's Award for Citizenship and Outreach in 2020.

Growing your own delicious veggies in your kitchen garden can be incredibly rewarding. Together we will learn how to use permaculture ideas and practices to design your kitchen garden for a successful and bountiful harvest that is in harmony with ecological biodiversity.

What to expect:

Through interactive and hands-on activities, we will learn what permaculture is, the ethics and principles that are central to permaculture, and how to use permaculture ideas and practices when deciding where to place your kitchen garden and how to design it to increase success. We will finish off the workshop with a mini “permablitz”; a hands-on experience of creating a no-dig garden bed that will offer the skills needed to grow food anywhere!

What’s included:

All tuition and materials are included. Tea, coffee and a light morning tea are included. Please bring protection from the weather as we will be spending some time outside, and anything you need for taking notes.

About the tutors:

Meredith has lived most of her life in the Blue Mountains and was introduced to permaculture as a child, by her dad. Since growing up she has worked on integrating the permaculture approach into many areas of life, from gardening to parenting to home building and beyond. Meredith completed a Permaculture Design Course in 2017 and Permaculture Teacher Training in 2021 with Rowe Morrow and Lis Bastian. Meredith has previously facilitated workshops in permaculture with children from the home education community. She feels excited to be able to share her passion for permaculture with the Lyttleton community.

Amelie is a pollinator ecologist and educator based in the Blue Mountains. Amelie researches the role of urban greenspaces for promoting pollinating insect biodiversity. She completed a Permaculture Design Course in 2018 and Permaculture Teacher Training in 2021 with Rowe Morrow and Lis Bastian. Amelie has facilitated over 100 workshops for all ages on the ecology of native bees, permaculture and designing for biodiversity across Australia and Japan. She is passionate about community gardens and came to permaculture through a desire to create connective places for people and pollinators. Her hope is to share this dream with our broader community.

Youth Permaculture and Social Enterprise Design Course (72 hours)

Free Youth Permaculture and Social Enterprise Design Course

5 – 28 January, 2022 (3 days a week over 4 wks. Total: 72 hrs)

This is a free course for young people aged 16 – 24

Bookings are essential to Lis on 0407 437 553 or via email to planetaryhealth@bmcc.nsw.gov.au

This PDC is co-taught with Lis Bastian, Amelie Vanderstock, Joshua Wolterding, Mellisa Chambers and Meredith Crawford- Mckay.

Permaculture is a powerful method for redesigning all our systems to restore Planetary Health. It looks at human and non-human systems through an ecological lens, utilising ethics and principles inspired by traditional cultures and natural ecosystems.

During the course participants learn new ways for organising societies, growing food regeneratively, restoring ecosystems and living sustainably and ethically in relationship with Country.

It is a solutions-focused response to the challenges of our world, and participants will work collaboratively to create a permaculture design of the old Katoomba Golf Course, reimagining it as a centre for Planetary Health. They will also work collaboratively to design social enterprises that provide meaningful livelihoods that can meet our communities’ needs.

The 72 hour internationally recognised Permaculture Design Course will also be followed by an optional mentoring program to develop the social enterprises designed during the course. Participants will learn more advanced skills for restoring Planetary Health and for running a business, being supported to ‘earn while you learn’ during this mentoring program.

We’re able to offer this workshop to young people for free thanks to the support of the Blue Mountains Pluriversity, Blue Mountains City Council’s Planetary Health Initiative, and funding from the NSW State Government’s Youth Opportunities Program.

Australian Pollinator Week Blue Mountains ZOOM workshop

Join pollinator ecologist, Amelie Vanderstock, from your own backyard to learn about the importance, ecology and diversity of our local pollinating insects.

BOOK HERE

Together we will become citizen scientists and step away from the screen to do a “Wild pollinator count” from wherever we are.

We’ll have a chance to share some of the insects we find and brainstorm ways to support our pollinators through planting and habitat creation in our own backyards.

This is a family-friendly, Live, ZOOM workshop.

This workshop will be recorded.

Preparation before the workshop

1) Print your wild pollinator count data sheet from https://wildpollinatorcount.com to use during the workshop.

2) Decide which plant you will observe in the counting time during the workshop. You do not need to have internet when observing, but it will be helpful if it is close to where you are zooming in from. Hint: More flowers = more likely to see pollinators! Any native or exotic flowering plant is great, so long as you can write down the name!

Workshop Outline

1) Why are pollinators important?

2) Some of the exciting insects we might see.

3) Let’s go count pollinators outside! (Away from the screen)

4) Who did we find?

5) The Bees Kneeds: What can we do to support our pollinators?

6) Q & A

After the workshop (Optional but recommended!)

1) Submit your observations to https://wildpollinatorcount.com/submit-observations to be part of the national citizen science project! You can also upload photos of the pollinators you observed to i-naturalist https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/wild-pollinator-count.

2) Feel free to upload your pollinator observations to social media with the hashtag #PlanetaryHealthBM #OzPollinatorWeek #WeAreNature #LoveHopeDo

December 22nd is the Winter Solstice. As we prepare for longer and longer and warmer days, let us share our gratitude for those we care about by making presents from seeds to sew in spring!
We will learn about the role of bees and flowers in the city through a guided walk around the city.

Native Bee Workshop at Groundswell & Pulse of the Earth Festival

You’ll find me in the creative kids space with a native bee workshop at ‘Groundswell’ and ‘ThePulse of the Earth’ Festival in Bingara, on Gomeroi country in NW NSW.

The “Pulse of the Earth” Festival will be held in Bingara on September 6,7 & 8. This promises to be a major event for our town and shire and an engaging and festive start to a new spring season.

The Living Classroom will host the event, presented by Bingara and District Vision 2020. The festival will include an arts program for “An Artist, a Farmer and a Scientist walk into a bar…”, the project that Bingara has hosted over the last two years with the Kandos School of Cultural Adaptation.

To register to attend this program, called ‘Groundswell’, go here. With a bit of luck we will be celebrating the end of the drought and the start of a wonderful period of renewal for the land and our communities.

FARM CHATS at Pocket City Farms // BEES

Join me on a panel hosted by Costa Georgiadis to discuss BEES! It’s estimated that a third of the food we eat is pollinated by bees, and without them our days on this Earth are numbered, and with heavy use of pesticides and the global phenomenon that is colony collapse disorder their risk of future extinction is a real possibility. So what can we do? How do we help maintain healthy populations of bees - both native and honeybees - that is natural and respectful to them? Join us for an evening of heartfelt discussion on our favourite little insect friends.

Tickets available through Pocket City Farms
